Oakleigh District Cricket Club
In early 1955, some Oakleigh District footballers decided to form a cricket club. Those footballers wanted to have a cricket team of Oakleigh District footballers, to stick together over the Summer. Some of the OD footballers were already playing in the lower ODCA matting grades for the Oakleigh Cricket Club, in the Sub-District competition.
The Oakleigh District Cricket Association admitted the new Club into the lower ‘B’ Grade of its two Grade association, for Season 1955-56. It played on one of the two concrete pitches at the ‘Police Paddocks’ ground, at Park Road. ( now the Oakleigh Recreation Centre ) The other pitch ran East West, and was used by the Oakleigh RSL. At various times the ODFCC also briefly used Caloola Ave, and Edward Street, for its Home grounds.
The ODFCC started with no equipment and for the first 2-3 seasons, it borrowed the coir mats from the Oakleigh Cricket Club. Playing equipment usually third-hand, was scrounged up until a season on two later, when the Club bought a secondhand equipment kit from the Claytonvale CC. The Club won the ‘B’ Grade Premiership in 1956-57,
with Peter Burns captaining the team, and was immediately promoted to the ‘A’ Grade competition.
Following its early success, the Club continued to feature in numerous Senior and Junior Finals appearances and providing high-standard opportunities for countless Senior and Junior local Cricketers. It was a solid and influential member Club of the ODCA, the SCA, and the SECA.
